Pascal Jansen looked with great interest at Liverpool-Ajax on Tuesday in preparation for AZ’s match against the team from Amsterdam on Sunday. He saw Liverpool predominate and saw a kind of game that Ajax rarely experiences.
“Liverpool maintained an intensity that Ajax rarely or never experiences,” Jansen tells De Telegraaf about Tuesday’s match. “Ajax really came across a irritated team. That intensity gives you a completely different game image. But you also know that Ajax can play away from that pressure with just a little less intensity. You saw that well with that goal they made.”
According to Jansen, the fact remains that the Ajax players have had more time to rest after their European match than the AZ players. The Alkmaarders won 4-1 against FC Vaduz at home on Thursday. Ajax had to play out, but the travel time they had to travel was also very short, according to Jansen. “A European game on Tuesday or Thursday is of course a significant difference.”
Jansen cannot have a completely fit selection on Sunday. Vangelis Pavlidis, among others, is still injured, but the coach will never use many injuries as an excuse. “It’s just the reality of the day. Some guys are not available, but we’re not going to hide behind that. Then others have to go.”
