As Ferrari team boss, Briatore had thwarted FIA: 'Their advantage was taken away from them'

Flavio Briatore sees that Ferrari has made too many mistakes in recent years. For example, the team should have been more assertive when it comes to the technical guidelines that the FIA introduced halfway through last season. In addition, the Scuderia did not dare to choose between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, despite the Monegask’s clear lead in the standings. Briatore also does not understand that Ferrari is so positive about the car at the start of each season, despite the fact that the competition also comes with fast cars.

Ferrari stumbled last year over the technical guidelines introduced by the FIA. “The season started very well for Ferrari, but then the FIA changed the rules because the cars bounced too much,” Briatore told the radio program La Politica nel Pallone. If he had been Mattia Binotto, the Italian would have thought of the right of veto. “If I had been at the helm of Ferrari, I would never have allowed that. Ferrari should have used its political influence much more strongly. They had an advantage and that advantage was taken away by the change in the rules.’

In addition to the fact that Ferrari lost a lot of ground due to a car that ran less well than at the start of the season, the team also made many strategic blunders. Briatore saw that the team gave both drivers too many fair chances. “Last year it was said that the car was a better fit for Charles Leclerc and less for Carlos Sainz. Then it would have been necessary to put everything on Leclerc, and behind that Sainz would have taken the points for the constructors’ championship.

Briatore: ‘It creates the wrong expectations’

Before the start of this season there was again good hope that Ferrari would compete for the title. However, the team shot itself in the foot. Ferrari is always a title contender in winter. At the presentation, a board member even said that he had never seen such a fast car. But such statements only make the fans agitated. Run a race first, then you’ll see. This only creates the wrong expectations. The fact is now that we have seen the other race cars: some opponents have done better,” said the former team boss.
