Two doctors have been elected senators in the Senate. These are Ruben Baumgarten (JA21) and Jan Anthonie Bruijn (VVD). The elections took place on May 30.

On 1 June, the Electoral Council announced the official results of the Senate elections. The 75 senators were elected on May 30 by the 572 members of the Provincial Council, the 19 members of the electoral colleges in the Caribbean Netherlands and the 25 members of the non-resident electoral college, the Electoral Council said.

Two doctors

Among the 75 new senators are again two doctors: a newcomer and a veteran. The first is Ruben Baumgarten (1969), clinical chemistry doctor, from JA21. He is also general director of the Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Center. Jan Anthonie Bruijn (1958), pathologist, specialized in kidney diseases, and professor of immunopathology, on the other hand, has been a member of the Senate for the VVD since 6 November 2012. Since 2019, he has also been chairman of the Senate.

In 2019, two doctors were also elected to the Senate: Bruijn and Nicki Pouw-Verweij – who was still with the FvD at the time. Pouw-Verweij is now a member of the House of Representatives for JA21.

According to the website parliament.com, 14 of the 75 senators, including the two doctors, have “experience in the healthcare sector.” There are also well-known names, such as Marian Kaljouw (VVD), outgoing chairman of the board of directors of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
