Pupils in primary and secondary education can also receive a free school meal next year. The cabinet has earmarked 166 million euros for this, according to sources from The Hague, a message from RTL Nieuws confirms.
Schools can apply for money from the ministry to prevent students from going to school on an empty stomach. This project started in March to combat poverty among children. Schools can choose whether they offer their students breakfast or lunch. It is also possible to give food vouchers from the Red Cross.
More than 1300 schools have registered for the free meals.
The outgoing cabinet now wants to continue the project, according to the cabinet plans that will only be officially announced on Prinsjesdag.
Last week it was already announced that an extra 2 billion euros will be allocated to improving the purchasing power of people with a low or middle income. The number of people below the poverty line threatens to exceed one million if nothing is done about purchasing power.
