Alpine does not see the point in competing with Red Bull: ‘Nobody comes close’

Alpine throws in the towel and surrenders to the dominance of Red Bull Racing. According to Alan Permane, Alpine’s sporting director, it is not possible to come close to the Austrian racing team. Alpine must therefore recognize that it will not win the battle, but will continue to focus on competing at the top, reports Permane at the French branch of Motorsport.com.

Red Bull enjoyed a strong start to the 2023 season and is firmly at the top of the standings. At the opening race in Bahrain, Max Verstappen crossed the finish line first, with teammate Sergio PĂ©rez coming in second. Two weeks later in Saudi Arabia it was the other way around. It is only the second time in history that Red Bull has achieved a consecutive one-two.

Permane: ‘Red Bull is unreachable’

It does show that Red Bull is very strong this season. The only driver she seems to keep up with is Fernando Alonso, who claimed third place both times in the Aston Martin. Still, he finished 38 and 20 seconds behind the winners in Sakhir and Jeddah respectively. So it seems that Red Bull will have little competition this year.

Alpine acknowledges Red Bull’s dominance and says it won’t even try to fight them again. Sporting director Permane says that there is no start. “It seems like they have an extra second per lap, to be honest,” says the Frenchman. “Looks like no one can come close this year.”

Alpine comes with significant improvements

It is a frustrating realization for Alpine, who had hoped to get a little closer to the top in 2023. “We just have to keep working hard, making improvements and believing in ourselves,” says Permane. “That helped us a lot last year.” There are still adjustments for the A523, which makes Permane believe that better times are ahead for drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon. “We have to improve all aspects, and we will.”
