Alonso signs multi-year contract extension with Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso has signed a multi-year deal with Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso’s contract expired at the end of this season, but the doyen of the Formula 1 field has signed for at least two more years. This means that it will be active until at least the end of 2026. Alonso will celebrate his 45th birthday in the summer of 2026.

Alonso moved to Aston Martin at the start of 2023, where he enjoyed a lightning start to the season, with six podium finishes in eight races. The experienced driver ultimately finished the season in fourth place and is now joint seventh in the championship with 24 points. This news also confirms that Alonso will team up with Honda again in 2026 after the rule change. Alonso had already worked with Honda at McLaren in the past, and that caused a lot of frustration at the time.

Aston Martin proud

In a statement from the team, team boss Mike Krack responded happily to the fact that his first driver signed a new contract. “It is great news for Aston Martin Aramco that Fernando is committing his long-term future to the team,” said the Luxembourger. “We have built a strong working relationship over the past eighteen months, and we share the same commitment to making this project a success.”

The timing of the contract extension is striking, as the 42-year-old Alonso was still critical after the race in Japan. The Spaniard finished sixth, 44 seconds behind race winner Max Verstappen, and indicated that it was not that interesting for him to finish such a big deficit after one of his best weekends ever. Krack responded by saying that the team must further improve the car to keep Alonso.

Deal until 2026?

In any case, Krack considers himself happy with the news. “We have been in constant discussions over the past few months and Fernando has kept his word: he said he would talk to us first if he decided to continue racing. Fernando has shown that he believes in us, and we believe in him. “Fernando is still hungry for success,” Krack adds about the driver who took his 32nd and last victory eleven years ago.

According to the statement, Alonso appears to have signed a deal until 2026. “Fernando is driving better than ever, fitter than ever, and fully committed to making Aston Martin Aramco a competitive player in the sport. This multi-year deal with Fernando leads us to 2026, when we enter into collaboration with engine partner Honda. We look forward to creating more incredible memories and achieving further success.”
