Ajax watcher Verweij: “Signs that they are working on dissolving the contract”

Ajax does not want to continue with Gerry Hamstra. The team from Amsterdam is working to terminate the technical manager’s contract, De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij has heard. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar seems to be getting more responsibility.

Hamstra, together with Huntelaar, is responsible for the technical policy at Ajax since the departure of Marc Overmars. The two are assisted by general manager Edwin van der Sar, but experienced a disappointing transfer summer. Many purchases disappoint in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Verweij does not rule out that this will ‘cost heads’ in the short term, he says in De Telegraaf’s football podcast.

Hamstra seems to be held responsible. “Hamstra has had the opportunity to profile himself by appointing a good trainer and making good purchases. If he had done that, he would probably have become technical director to succeed Overmars.” The team from Amsterdam is now about to get Julian Ward from Liverpool for that position. “I think it will eventually have consequences. That either Hamstra chooses to leave himself or that Ajax decides that it is better that he leaves. I do get several signals that they are working on the dissolution of his contract. “

Hamstra may not even finish the season. “Huntelaar is also walking around. What’s the point if you’re walking around at Ajax until July 1 and you actually have no strength left at all, then you might as well get out now.” Ajax does want to continue with Huntelaar, says Verweij. “I even understood that Huntelaar is now partly responsible for scouting.”

Hamstra started working in Amsterdam in 2021, where he would mainly take care of the contracts of youth players. This changed after the departure of Overmars.
