Ajax millions purchase honestly: 'I had some mental problems when I started here'

Ahmetcan Kaplan had to deal with mental problems after his transfer to Ajax. However, the Turkish defender is now doing better, despite recovering from a serious knee injury for the second time this season.

Last summer, Kaplan came over from Trabzonspor for 9.5 million euros. He soon injured his knee. In the winter break he was fit again, but then he suffered another serious injury. As a result, Kaplan will no longer make his Ajax debut this season. “I’ve never had such a big injury,” says the youth international in conversation with the club channels.

“Mentally it’s very tough, but I will get over it. I live alone now and had some mental problems when I started here: on my own, in a foreign country with a different culture,” Kaplan is honest. “But I can say I’m used to it now.”

Kaplan has to train and rehabilitate a lot individually, but he still notices that the Ajax players treat him well. “Everyone is very friendly, I think I have a good relationship with the team. Some players even know some Turkish words. Berghuis can speak a little Turkish, because he has Turkish friends. Davy Klaassen and Kenneth Taylor can do it too.”
