Ajax and Berghuis fined come with an official statement: 'I am sorry'

Steven Berghuis and Ajax have responded in an official statement to the much-discussed incident after the away match against FC Twente (3-1). The Ajax player dealt a blow after Brian Brobbey was treated racist by a supporter, and now regrets it.

“I regret my action, I should not have done this,” Berghuis said. “After every away game, we get a lot of curses thrown at us at the bus, while we make time to hand out autographs to fans who ask for it. I’m used to it by now, but people think they can shout anything.”

Berghuis understands that his response does not solve anything. “It’s not good, I have an exemplary role as an Ajax player,” said the Orange international, who was fined by his employer.

Upon arrival in Amsterdam, Berghuis immediately had a conversation with trainer John Heitinga, general manager Edwin van der Sar and director of football affairs Sven Mislintat. They also wanted to hear his side of the story. The conclusion is that his reaction was wrong and that Ajax disapproves. We will resolve it internally with him.’

Things got out of hand at the Ajax players’ bus: Brobbey was called ‘cancer black’, a witness told TC/Tubantia. Berghuis stood up for his 21-year-old teammate and got a story from the bystander, who then received a blow from the Ajax player.
