Tallon Griekspoor overcame a shaky start to reach the second round of the French Open by beating Marcos Giron in four sets.

Griekspoor, currently ranked 35th in the world, lost his opening service game to the US hard-court specialist and went on to lose the opening set 6-4.

But the 28-year-old showed his superiority on the clay of Paris as he won the next two sets without facing a break of serve.

Griekspoor saved his best tennis for the fourth set, setting up the decisive break with a backhand volley at the net at 5-5 before going on to win the match at the first opportunity.

“It’s never easy in the first round of a grand slam,” said Griekspoor. “My first set was poor, the second wasn’t great either but I served better, and the level of sets three and four were good but I had to work for it.”

He now faces Canada’s Gabrielle Diallo, the world number 54, who upset the odds to beat the 18th seed, Argentina’s Francisco Gerúndolo, in straight sets in the opening round.

Rus through

In the women’s singles, Arantxa Rus, ranked 94th in the world, beat Colombia’s Camila Osirio in three sets to reach the second round, where she will play the Danish world number 22, Clara Tauson.

Later on Tuesday Jesper de Jong plays his first-round match against Italy’s Francesco Passaro, while Suzan Lamens faces the American player Ashlyn Krueger.

Botic van de Zandschulp lost his opening match in straight sets to the lower-ranked American, Emilio Nava.
