A 24-year-old man was killed in a stabbing incident in an asylum seekers’ center in the Overijssel municipality of Hardenberg last night. Police have arrested a 23-year-old suspect. Both the suspect and the victim stayed in the asylum seekers’ centre.
The police are still investigating what exactly happened and what the circumstances of the stabbing incident were. After the incident, first aid was provided to the victim, but the 24-year-old man could not be saved.
The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) says that victim support is available for people who witnessed the incident. It is not clear how many witnesses are involved. The stabbing incident happened around midnight.
750 asylum seekers
The asylum seekers center was opened in 2016 and can accommodate 750 asylum seekers. The center is located in the hamlet of Heemserveen, northwest of Hardenberg.
At the beginning of January there was also a stabbing incident in the Overijssel asylum seekers’ center. Two people were injured in the incident.
