A 12-year-old boy died this afternoon after being hit by a bus. That happened this morning in the village of Sommelsdijk, on Goeree-Overflakkee. The victim from Melissant was on his bicycle and would have been on his way to school, Rijnmond writes. He was hit while crossing the road.
The victim was taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious head injuries, but he was no longer conscious at the time. He died this afternoon.
Traffic situation
A witness tells the regional broadcaster how she was alerted by a huge scream this morning after a blow. “I heard a scream like I’d never heard before,” she says. “It was the bus driver. I went to see if I could help and saw that the boy was unconscious and first aid was being given by a neighbor. I then went to the bus driver to reassure her, as best as I could. that was possible.”
The police expect that Rijkswaterstaat will look at how the traffic situation can be made safer. “It is certain that something has to be done,” says the witness. “That’s what the police said too.”
