The Dutch coast is beautiful all year round. Whether you’re sitting in the warmth of a beach bar with a cup of tea in the fall after a long walk, or you’re enjoying the “Indian summer” sun from a lazy chair. Below are the 10 most beautiful beaches in the Netherlands. Rain or shine, these are ten coastal towns to get a breath of fresh air.

1. Hargen aan Zee: near the Schoorlse Duinen (North Holland)

10 most beautiful beaches of the Netherlands

This small, young seaside resort is close to its busier brother Schoorl and is a great contrast to seaside resorts that are close to (large) cities. In Hargen you will find peace and space. Hargen aan Zee is not actually a village, but a quiet stretch of beach with beach pavilions with a mystical pine forest nearby. Definitely worth exploring!

In the vicinity are the towns of Camperduin, Schoorl, Groet and Bergen aan Zee. Schoorl is best known for Het Klimduin where children (and tough parents) run down in a few minutes – going up takes a little longer. In Schoorl and the surrounding area you can also enjoy the dunes, forest and polder landscape on foot and by bicyle.

2. Julianadorp: colorful royal seaside resort (North Holland)

Just below Den Helder lies Julianadorp, which consists of two parts: the coastal town of Julianadorp and the seaside resort of Julianadorp aan Zee. The beach of Julianadorp aan Zee has been in the top 10 of the most beautiful Dutch beaches for years. There are four entrances to the beach. The northernmost (Falga) and southernmost (Drooge Weert) are the quietest.

“Koninklijk” Julianadorp – named after the Netherlands’ former queen – is located between colorful tulip fields and the dunes. Such as the Helderse Duinen, with the Helderse Vallei city farm. Enjoy a picnic, cycling, climbing or paddling in your canoe through the beautiful nature. The impressive North Sea aquarium at Fort Kijkduin is also definitely worth a visit.

3. Callantsoog: the whitest beach in the Netherlands (North Holland)

Callantsoog is a small, quiet seaside resort. Even in the high season you will find peace. The three and a half kilometer long sandy beach of Callantsoog is perhaps the whitest in the Netherlands. Did you know that seals are regularly released at beach bar De Toko? They come recovered from the Pieterburen seal center and are allowed back into the sea.

The village of Callantsoog itself can be found directly behind the beach, with usually cozy markets in the summer. Callantsoog also borders nature reserve Het Zwanenwater, where you can admire beautiful butterflies, wild orchids and the unique sand lizard. The most special treasures from the sea can be found in Juttersmuseum Callantsoog, such as the baby mermaid and the cheerful works of art by beachcomber Challa. Be surprised!

4. De Hors: the quietest stretch of beach on Texel (North Holland)

If you are talking about the North Holland coast, then the Wadden Island of Texel should of course not be missed. The quietest beach is De Hors, on the southernmost tip of Texel. Nature has free reign there. The sea regularly throws up the sand, creating small dunes. The beach of the Hors is the only place on Texel where these “baby dunes” can be seen. You can walk freely in this nature reserve, except for a part where the rare dwarf tern bird breeds.

Want some more action? Then sail from Oudeschild with a shrimp cutter into the Wadden Sea to fish for shrimps. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot some seals along the way. Care farm Novalishoeve is also recommended. Reward yourself anyway with an ice cream, version of coffee from the Texel branding or a Texel Skuumkoppe.

5. Kijkduin: the quiet brother of Scheveningen (South Holland)

On this small-scale beach you can enjoy the tranquility of the dunes, drinks on the terrace and preferably also the warm summer sun. The Zuiderstrand is located between Scheveningen and Kijkduin. Because no road passes here, finding a quiet spot is a breeze. Kijkduin is part of a long coastline that you can walk or cycle along. Special is a trip to the crater the Heavenly Vault. Lying on your back you stare from the crater at passing clouds and stars. For children there is the Jutterskeet, hidden between the dunes. They go fishing in the sea with a net or look for treasures with a real metal detector.

6. Duindamseslag and Langevelderslag (South Holland): find peace in Noordwijk

The sandy beach of Noordwijk – in their own words Holland’s finest beach – is more than 13 kilometers long. So be sure to bring your water sports equipment! For your well-deserved rest, go to the Duindamseslag and the Langevelderslag: these beaches are not accessible by car. You get there via the dunes after a wonderful walk or bike ride.

When the weather is bad, a visit to the Space Expo in Noordwijk is highly recommended. Fancy something active? Climb the lighthouse of Noordwijk aan Zee, with six floors and a dizzying number of steps. Once at the top you will be rewarded with the most beautiful view of the area.

7. Ouddorp: relax on an island (South Holland)

Ouddorp is the westernmost village on the South Holland island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The beach is 17 kilometers long and sometimes hundreds of meters wide. Ouddorp borders the Grevelingenmeer, so you can relax by the water. And you certainly don’t have to get bored. At goat farm De Mekkerstee you can see how goats are milked and how cheese is made. There is also a playground and a picking garden. Do you see blue houses while cycling? That could be right. The farms in Ouddorp used to be painted blue because that color would keep flies away. Prefer the water? With the Grevelingen ship you can make a beautiful 1.5-hour cruise on the Grevelingen.

8. Zoutelande: on the coast, the Zeeland coast (Zeeland)

The most sung about beach in this list. The town of Zoutelande itself is not that big, but you will find one of the most beautiful beaches in our country. It is the only beach in the Netherlands that lies to the south and is therefore also called the Zeeland Riviera. Normally, the beach is quite full of tourists in the summer, but if they stay away (for a while), it is wonderful to enjoy. In the village itself you can, of course, get a nice fish. You will also find the bunkers of Zoutelande here. Visit them for a history lesson about World War II. Ready for something cozier? In Zeeland you will find several wine and beer breweries.

9. Cadzand: seaside resort with the most hours of sunshine (Zeeland)

The beach of Cadzand-Bad is not only the southernmost beach in the Netherlands, it has regularly been awarded the cleanest beach in the Netherlands. Although it can get quite busy in the pleasant center in the summer months, you can always find a quiet spot on the 14 kilometer long sandy beach. Why a visit to the Zeeland coastal town is even more of a good idea? Because you can visit the new nature park Zwin, just across the border in West Flanders. This ‘international airport for birds’ can be found on the edge of the village. Rent an electric golf cart from Park & Drive and take a beautiful trip along the sea.

10. Vrouwenpolder: the widest beach in the Netherlands (Zeeland)

The location of Vrouwenpolder is perfect for a holiday in your own country: to the east of the polder is the impressive Oranjezon nature reserve, where you can map out walking routes to spot roe deer and fallow deer. The wide and clean beach is located on the north side. When you look west, you will see the impressive Oosterscheldekering. Further on is the Veerse Meer, where you can surf, dive and sail. Would you rather go into town? The monumental cities of Veere and Middelburg, the beautiful port city of Vlissingen and the fashionable shopping town of Domburg are just around the corner. Fancy Zeeland?
